Iran's Zarif Meets Iraqi Leader In Baghdad For Talks On Cooperation

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th January, 2019) Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met with Iraqi President Barham Salih on Monday for talks on pressing bilateral, regional and international issues, his ministry said.

The Iranian top diplomat, who has been in the Iraqi capital since the weekend, said the talks had opened "a new chapter in furthering and strengthening cooperation between Iran and Iraq."

On Sunday, Zarif held talks with his Iraqi counterpart, Mohammed Ali Hakim, and Iraq's Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi, followed by a visit to parliament on Monday where he spoke to its speaker, Mohammed Halbousi.

The talks covered a wide range of issues, most importantly energy. The United States imposed sanctions on Iran's energy export last November but granted Iraq a temporary waiver to reduce its dependence on Iranian electricity.
