Moscow Blasts US Claims on Notifying Russian Consulate in Seattle on Makarenko Arrest

The US claims that a notification on the recent detention of Russian national Dmitrii Makarenko was sent to the Russian consulate in Seattle stand no scrutiny, because the consulate has been closed for months at the order of the US authorities, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Friday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th January, 2019) The US claims that a notification on the recent detention of Russian national Dmitrii Makarenko was sent to the Russian consulate in Seattle stand no scrutiny, because the consulate has been closed for months at the order of the US authorities, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Friday.

Makarenko was detained by the FBI in the Northern Mariana Islands December 29 over allegations of illegally exporting military goods.

"We are following closely on the situation with Dmitrii Makarenko, the Russian national... We want to stress that the Russian Embassy in Washington learned about [his arrest] not from US law enforcement, but from Makarenko's relatives. The US authorities did not inform the Russian side on the detention within three days in violation of the bilateral consular convention," Zakharova said.

"The US attempts to justify itself by claiming that a notification was allegedly sent to our consulate in Seattle, which was closed by the United States in March last year, stands no scrutiny," the spokeswoman added.
