WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th January, 2019) US forces have conducted two airstrikes in Somalia that killed four members of the Al-Shabab terrorist group, United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) said in a press release on Tuesday."To support the Federal Government of Somalia's continued efforts to degrade al-Shabaab, U.S. forces conducted two (2) airstrikes targeting al-Shabaab militants in the vicinity of Baqdaad, Somalia, on January 7, 2019," AFRICOM said. "We currently assess the airstrikes killed four militants."
AFRICOM believes that no civilians were injured or killed in the airstrike, the release added.
Both airstrikes were conducted in "self defense" after the United States' Somali partners on the ground came under attack by Al-Shabab militants, AFRICOM said.
Al-Shabab, which has sworn allegiance to the Al-Qaeda terrorist group (banned in Russia), emerged in Somalia in 2006 and has been responsible for numerous terror attacks throughout the region. The terror group is known for enforcing a radical version of Shariah law in territories under its control.
