A news website reported that police in Phoenix, the capital of Arizona state, are looking into possible sexual abuse.
"None of the staff were aware that she was pregnant until she was pretty much giving birth," the website quoted a source as saying.
The Washington Post said the birth of a baby boy on December 29 -- "and the sexual assault of a vulnerable individual that must have preceded it -- has cast a harsh glare on conditions at a nonprofit organization [called Hacienda HealthCare] that bills itself as a leading provider of health care for Phoenix’s medically fragile".
After the news reports emerged, a spokesperson of Hacienda HealthCare said we are "fully committed to getting to the truth of what, for us, represents an unprecedented matter."
Although details about the patient aren't yet public — like her age and name — Arizona's Family did confirm she suffered a near-drowning incident more than a decade ago that left her in a vegetative state.
The woman was then placed in a nursing facility where she received around-the-clock care.
The baby is however reportedly healthy.
It is also not clear if the woman has family or a guardian to advocate for her. But two nonprofits came forward today volunteering to do it if there's not a thorough investigation.
