Japan Court Extends Detention Of Nissan Ex-Chairman Ghosn Until January 1 - Reports

TOKYO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd December, 2018) A Tokyo district court has ruled to extend the detention of Carlos Ghosn, the former chairman of Japanese automaker Nissan Motor, by another 10 days until January 1, 2019, local media reported.

On Friday, Tokyo's prosecutor's office issued a third arrest warrant for Ghosn, who has been in custody for over a month already. The prosecutor's office brought new charges against Ghosn, suspecting him of misusing public office for personal gain. According to the prosecution, Ghosn might have used Nissan funds to make up for private investment losses of about 1.85 billion Yen ($16 million).

In addition, the prosecution might request another extension, which, if approved, would prolong Ghosn's period of stay in custody until January 11, the NHK broadcaster reported.

Ghosn was detained on November 19 and indicted on charges of having under-reported about 5 billion yen (about $44 million) of his salary between 2010 and 2015 with the help of former Nissan senior executive Greg Kelly, who was arrested alongside his associate.

In addition, Ghosn purchased properties in Amsterdam, Beirut, Paris and Rio de Janeiro for company's money. The purchase was not justified by the company's needs and was used by Ghosn's family. Kelly was involved in the properties' purchase as well.
