At Least 15 People Injured, 11 Detained During Barcelona Clashes - Reports

MADRID (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st December, 2018) Clashes between the police and protesters are taking place in the Catalan capital of Barcelona, and at least 11 people have been detained and 15 have been injured so far, local media reported on Friday.

According to EFE news agency, there are four police officers among the injured.

The most violent protesters have been throwing stones at police officers, turning over garbage cans and pulling out traffic light poles. The police have used batons in response.

According to the police force of Catalonia, Mossos d'Esquadra, at least 11 people have been detained.

A correspondent for one of the local tv channels was among those injured after he was attacked by protesters who beat him during a live broadcast. The clashes have not stopped, so the number of casualties may increase.

The protesters are trying to break through the police cordon to Llotja de Mar palace, where the Spanish cabinet is meeting.

Catalan pro-independence activists have repeatedly held rallies since the Spanish central authorities refused to recognize the results of the October 2017 independence referendum, and subsequently dissolved the regional parliament and introduced direct rule over Catalonia.

At the referendum, over 90 percent of those who participated in the vote supported Catalonia's secession from Spain.
