German Court Rejects Charges Against Nazi Camp Guard Suspect

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st December, 2018) A regional court in Berlin said Friday it would not try a German man suspected of having guarded a concentration camp in Austria over lack of proof.

"There are not enough facts to substantiate allegations against the 95-year-old from Berlin that he was an accomplice to the murder of thousands," the press release read.

The ruling is not final and has been challenged by the prosecutors. They filed charges against the man last October. He was accused of guarding the Mauthausen camp between August 29, 1944 and May 5, 1945.

As a member of the SS Dead Head unit, he was suspected of playing a role in the loss of 36,223 lives of camp inmates who were killed or worked to death in Mauthausen during that period.

The suspect admitted to having served with the SS but denied having ever set foot in the camp, according to the court. He said he had guarded another camp and an arms factory in Linz and was away on a combat mission during part of the time mentioned.
