US Court Rejects Trump Policy Refusing Asylum to Migrants Fleeing Domestic Violence - ACLU

A US federal court has overturned a Trump administration policy that victims of gang violence or domestic abuse do not qualify for asylum in the United States, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said in a statement on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th December, 2018) A US Federal court has overturned a Trump administration policy that victims of gang violence or domestic abuse do not qualify for asylum in the United States, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said in a statement on Wednesday.

"A federal court permanently struck down a Trump administration policy gutting asylum protections for immigrants fleeing domestic violence and gang brutality," the ACLU said via Twitter. "This ruling is another defeat for the Trump administration's all-out assault on the rights of asylum seekers."

On August 8, the ACLU filed a lawsuit against then-US Attorney General Jeff Sessions for unlawfully denying asylum to immigrants from Central America.

The lawsuit argued that Sessions had no constitutional right to deny asylum protection to immigrants who became victims of domestic and gang violence in their native countries. The policies enforced by the Department of Justice undermine the human rights of women, the ACLU said.
