Russian Firms Unfazed by Western Exodus From Iran - Official

Russian companies working in Iran are not scaling down their operations despite US sanctions on firms doing business with the Republic, Russia's permanent representative at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said Monday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th December, 2018) Russian companies working in Iran are not scaling down their operations despite US sanctions on firms doing business with the Republic, Russia's permanent representative at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said Monday.

"Western businesses, at least big ones, are running from Iran for fear of being targeted by US anti-Iran sanctions... Our trade with Iran has been on the rise this year. We are not going to flee Iran, our firms continue to operate there," Mikhail Ulyanov said in a video link-up at the Rossiya Segodnya news agency.

Russian energy major Rosneft signed a road map last year with the National Iranian Oil Company on how to implement strategic oil and gas projects in Iran, including joint projects to produce up to 55 million tonnes of crude a year.

A Russian newspaper, Vedomosti, cited sources as saying last week that talks on these plans stalled in summer after US President Donald Trump said in May he was pulling the country from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and bringing back sanctions waived by the previous administration.
