Russia Can Help Bring India, Pakistan to Negotiating Table - Pakistani Senate Deputy Head

Russia is capable of bringing both Pakistan and India to the negotiating table given oscow's good relations with both sides, Deputy Chairman of Pakistan's upper legislative chamber Saleem andviwalla told Sputnik

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th December, 2018) Russia is capable of bringing both Pakistan and India to the negotiating table given oscow's good relations with both sides, Deputy Chairman of Pakistan's upper legislative chamber Saleem andviwalla told Sputnik.

"Russia can play an important role in bringing both these countries together to discuss and to resolve their issues because Russia has good relations with India and with Pakistan. A country like Russia can play this role, I think," Mandviwalla said.

The official noted that Pakistan always wanted to have good relations with India.

According to Mandviwalla, the Pakistan-India relations are not completely bad, but "there is a stalemate situation."

The relations between India and Pakistan have been tense ever since the former British-controlled territories were partitioned in 1947. In particular, India and Pakistan each lay claim to a portion of the Kashmir region, which has often been a source of conflict between the two countries.

Imran Khan, who leads Pakistan's ruling Tehreek-e-Insaf party, was elected prime minister in August following a vote in the National Assembly, where he gained the support of 176 lawmakers, defeating the opposition's candidate, Shahbaz Sharif, who got 96 votes. One of Khan's foreign policy priorities is the establishment of a dialogue between Pakistan and India.
