Deadlock over PAC chairmanship ends as govt, opposition agree on Shehbaz Sharif’s name

A sub-committee will be formed to review the audit objections on Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 13th December, 2018) The months long impasse over appointing a chairman of Public Accounts Committee ended on Thursday as the government and opposition agreed to appoint Shehbaz Sharif as the chairman.

The consultation over PAC chairman concluded after both the parties agreed on Shehbaz Sharif’s name.

A sub-committee will be formed to review the audit objections on Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The head of the sub-committee will be from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Speaking to media after meeting Shehbaz Sharif, Defence Minister Parvez Khattak said that acknowledging the tradition, Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif was made the PAC chairman.

The PAC is the apex parliamentary watchdog that oversees the audit of revenue and expenditures by the government and it is considered to be the most powerful and important committee of parliament.

Although there is no restriction on the government in the rules to give the chairmanship of the PAC to the opposition parties, it has been a parliamentary tradition for the past 10 years that the office is given to an opposition member in order to ensure transparency in financial matters.

The PTI was unwilling to give the PAC chairmanship to Shahbaz, saying it could not allow him to review the projects that had been initiated and executed by the government of his elder brother Nawaz Sharif.

Therefore, a deadlock persisted on apponting the PAC chairman.
