Pompeo Urges UN Security Council to Keep Arms Embargo on Iran Beyond 2020

The United States is calling on the United Nations Security Council to maintain its arms embargo on Iran after it expires in 2020, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) The United States is calling on the United Nations Security Council to maintain its arms embargo on Iran after it expires in 2020, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said on Wednesday.

"The [Security] Council should not lift the arms embargo in 2020 on Iran," Pompeo said during a meeting of the council.

Pompeo warned that Iran continues to violate multiple Security Council resolutions.

The UN Security Council imposed the arms embargo on Iran in several stages. In 2006, the organization banned exports of technology that could be used to develop nuclear weapons. In 2007, the UN Security Council also outlawed arms exports from Iran. Finally, in June 2010, the United Nations put an embargo on all major conventional arms exports to the Islamic Republic. The restrictions are expected to be lifted five years after the day the the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Actions (JCPOA) was adopted, or in October 2020.
