France Imposes Temporary Ban on Rallies in Strasbourg After Shooting - Interior Ministry

The French authorities imposed on Wednesday a temporary ban on any rallies in the northeastern city of Strasbourg following the Tuesday shooting attack, Secretary of State of the French Interior Ministry Laurent Nunez said.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) The French authorities imposed on Wednesday a temporary ban on any rallies in the northeastern city of Strasbourg following the Tuesday shooting attack, Secretary of State of the French Interior Ministry Laurent Nunez said.

"The measures were adopted only for Strasbourg as of today," Nunez told the France Inter broadcaster.

He also criticized the reports suggesting that the adopted security measures were aimed at suppressing the ongoing "yellow vest" protests.

According to the French Interior Ministry, three people were killed as a result of the shooting near the Christmas fair in Strasbourg, while another 13 were injured. The shooter is still at large. Media reported that the suspect was a 29-year-old native of Strasbourg, who was previously convicted for an armed attack.

French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner, who arrived in Strasbourg following the attack, said that six victims were in critical condition.

France has seen a wave of mass protests since mid-November, when the so-called yellow vest protesters named after the obligatory attribute of French drivers took to the streets to rally against rising fuel prices and a planned hike in tax on diesel and carbon fuels. The yellow vest rallies in France have been marked by violent clashes with police officers, who have used tear gas and rubber bullets against the protesters.
