Second Hezbollah Tunnel Discovered in Israel - UN Spokesperson

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has confirmed the presence of a second tunnel on the border between Lebanon and Israel, Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said in a press briefing on Tuesday.

NEW YORK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th December, 2018) The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has confirmed the presence of a second tunnel on the border between Lebanon and Israel, Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said in a press briefing on Tuesday.

"Yesterday, the UNIFIL technical team, led by the Deputy Force Commander, verified the existence of a second tunnel, north of the previous one in the same general area," Haq said. "UNIFIL is continuing to follow up with on this issue in close coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces."

Last week, UNIFIL issued a statement confirming the existence of a tunnel near Metulla in northern Israel discovered by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

The announcement came after Israel launched an operation to destroy tunnels it says were built by the militant group Hezbollah to infiltrate the country in a future war.

Earlier last week, the UN announced that it would send a military delegation to Israel to monitor the Blue Line, or the UN-drawn Lebanese-Israeli border, and 'ascertain' the facts on alleged the Hezbollah trans-boundary tunnels.

The UN announcement followed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's request to the UN Security Council to convene an urgent meeting to condemn Hezbollah's alleged actions.

Israel traditionally views Hezbollah's presence in Lebanon and Syria as a threat to its national security as the movement is backed by Iran, which is Israel's main rival in the region.
