Trump, Democratic Leaders Have Heated Exchange Over Border Wall as Shutdown Looms

US President Donald Trump during a heated exchange at the White House with Democratic congressional leaders said he will take responsibility for shutting down the government if he does not get the funding he wants for border security.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th December, 2018) US President Donald Trump during a heated exchange at the White House with Democratic congressional leaders said he will take responsibility for shutting down the government if he does not get the funding he wants for border security.

"If we don't get what we want one way or the other, whether it's through you, through a military, through anything you want to call, I will shut down the government," Trump said during the debate, parts of which were nationally televised. "I am proud to shut down the government for border security... because the people of this country don't want criminals and people that have lots of problems and drugs pouring into our country."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said they are also in favor of border security, but do not want to dedicate $5 billion to the wall, which is what Trump is requesting.

Pelosi told Trump she had come to this meeting in the Oval Office in good faith to negotiate a deal to prevent a government shutdown.

Schumer said that he and Trump disagree about the wall but not about securing the border. The senate leader also said that Trump has threatened to shut down the government at least 20 times.

Both the House and Senate have until December 22 to pass funding bills in order to prevent a partial government shutdown.
