Lavrov Says Explained to Maas Expanding OSCE Mandate on Azov Sea Has No Prospects

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Friday his German counterpart Heiko Maas had raised at their bilateral meeting the issue of expanding the OSCE mandate to the Sea of Azov, and Moscow explained that this had no prospects

MILAN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th December, 2018) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Friday his German counterpart Heiko Maas had raised at their bilateral meeting the issue of expanding the OSCE mandate to the Sea of Azov, and Moscow explained that this had no prospects.

"Yes, he raised the issue at our meeting yesterday. He raised a number of other ideas [too]. I explained to him that such initiatives had no prospects," Lavrov told reporters.

"Certainly, no one will prohibit discussing these things December 11 and on other days. But the OSCE has a specific mandate, which extends to the entire land territory of Ukraine. There are even areas that have representative offices of this special monitoring mission. No monitoring, no mediators are required either in the Sea of Azov or in the Kerch Strait. They just must strictly follow the security rules when passing through the Kerch Strait," he said.
