South Korea Wants to Achieve Peace, Denuclearization of Peninsula Within 5 Years - Reports

The South Korean government wants to achieve peace and denuclearize the Korean Peninsula within the next five years, local media reported Monday, citing the government's report for the parliament.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd December, 2018) The South Korean government wants to achieve peace and denuclearize the Korean Peninsula within the next five years, local media reported Monday, citing the government's report for the parliament.

According to the Yonhap news agency, the government presented to the parliament the objectives and directions of the country's policy on inter-Korean relations for 2018-2022. The five-year plan focuses on full denuclearization as well as replacing the 1953 Korean armistice agreement with a full-fledged peace treaty.

Seoul also wants to build mutual trust between the militaries of both Korean states and gradually work toward arms control.

The administration of President Moon Jae-in is less focused on unifying the Koreas than the previous administration of former President Park Geun-hye was and instead wants to concentrate efforts on creating a "new economic community" and developing bilateral relations.

The situation on the Korean Peninsula has improved since the beginning of this year. During this time, North Korean leader Kim Jon Un and South Korean President Moon have held several meetings, with Kim even having a historic summit with US President Donald Trump. This summit yielded an agreement stipulating that North Korea would make efforts to promote the complete denuclearization of the peninsula in exchange for the United States and South Korea freezing their military drills as well as the potential removal of US sanctions. The decision echoed an earlier Russian-Chinese initiative calling for the end of Pyongyang's nuclear tests in exchange for freezing US military activities near the peninsula.
