Uruguay Rejects Peruvian Ex-President's Asylum Request - Foreign Minister

Uruguay's authorities do not plan to provide asylum to former President of Peru Alan Garcia, who is suspected of corruption, and want him leave the country's embassy in Lima, Uruguayan Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa said Monday.

MONTEVIDEO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd December, 2018) Uruguay's authorities do not plan to provide asylum to former President of Peru Alan Garcia, who is suspected of corruption, and want him leave the country's embassy in Lima, Uruguayan Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa said Monday.

Garcia, who is suspected of criminal conspiracies and money laundering, came to the Uruguayan embassy in mid-November requesting asylum.

"We have tasked our ambassador to Peru with asking Mr. Alan Garcia to leave our diplomatic mission," the minister said during the press conference.

The minister added that Montevideo did not consider the investigation of Garcia's case to be political persecution.

According to prosecutors, the ex-president received a bribe of $100,000 from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.

According to an US Court, Latin American political elites received millions in bribes from Oderbrecht, one of the main contractors of Brazilian energy giant Petrobras. In total, Oderbecht paid foreign politicians and public officials $439 million between 2001 and 2016. Among the recipients of the bribes were civil servants from Argentina, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.
