Guterres Briefed on Kerch Incident, Made Certain Contacts - Spokesman

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has received a briefing on the situation in Kerch Strait and has made the appropriate contacts, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a press briefing on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th November, 2018) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has received a briefing on the situation in Kerch Strait and has made the appropriate contacts, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a press briefing on Monday.

When asked about Guterres' response to the incident in Kerch Strait, the spokesman said, "He has been fully briefed on the situation. Contacts have been made on various levels."

The spokesman reiterated that the United Nations calls on both parties to come to the table for negotiations.

On Sunday, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said it intercepted three Ukrainian naval ships that illegally entered Russian territorial waters in violation of international law while moving from the Black Sea into the Azov Sea. The FSB said the Ukrainian vessels failed to respond to warnings and instead made dangerous maneuvers, prompting the agency to detain the ships.

On Monday, the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council imposed martial law in Ukraine for a period of 30 days, and the chief of the Ukrainian General Staff has ordered the country's armed forces to be on full combat alert.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said it handed a protest note to Ukraine's Charge d'Affaires Ruslan Nimchinsky on Monday over Sunday's incident in the Kerch Strait.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also said the responsibility for the escalation of the conflict situation in the Azov Sea-Black Sea region lies fully with the authorities in Kiev.
