US Woman Pleads Guilty in Fraud Scheme to Fund Islamic State Terrorists - Justice Dept.

A New York woman has pleaded guilty to providing material support to the Islamic state terrorist group (IS, outlawed in Russia), the US Department of Justice announced in a press release on Monday.

NEW YORK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th November, 2018) A New York woman has pleaded guilty to providing material support to the Islamic state terrorist group (IS, outlawed in Russia), the US Department of Justice announced in a press release on Monday.

"Zoobia Shahnaz, 27, of Brentwood, New York, pleaded guilty to providing material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization," the press release said.

Between March and July 2017, Shahnaz defrauded numerous financial institutions, including by taking out loans on false pretenses and fraudulently applying and using dozens of credit cards, according to court filings. Shahnaz allegedly wire transferred over $150,000 to organizations and individuals in Pakistan, China and Turkey that served as fronts for the IS terrorist group.

Shahnaz was apprehended by the Joint Task Terrorism Force (JTTF) at the John F. Kennedy International airport in July 2017, when she was attempting to travel to Syria with a multi-day layover in Turkey, the release said.

The defendant faces up to 20 years in prison, as well as restitution and fines, according to the Justice Department.
