Tokyo Expresses Protest to Seoul After South Korean Lawmakers Visit Disputed Islands

The Japanese Foreign Ministry filed a protest to Seoul on Monday over of the visit of South Korean parliamentarians to the disputed Dokdo islets, known as Takeshima in Japan, local media reported.

TOKYO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th November, 2018) The Japanese Foreign Ministry filed a protest to Seoul on Monday over of the visit of South Korean parliamentarians to the disputed Dokdo islets, known as Takeshima in Japan, local media reported.

Earlier in the day, a group of eight South Korean lawmakers visited the islands. On October 22, a group of 13 South Korean lawmakers also attended the territory.

The ministry conveyed the protests through the South Korean Embassy in Tokyo as well as through the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, stating that "this is contrary to Japan's position on the islands and is unacceptable," according to the NHK broadcaster.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono said that the South Korean government was possibly involved in the move.

"This is an action of lawmakers, but it is likely that the government is also involved. It is necessary to find out the degree of responsibility of the South Korean government," he said.

The Liancourt Rocks islands, also known as Dokdo and Takeshima, have been administered by South Korea since 1954, but Japan disputes Seoul's sovereignty over the territory.
