UN Delivers 130 Tonnes of Aid to Venezuela to Help Women, Children - UNICEF

Humanitarian workers from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have delivered some 130 tonnes of aid to Venezuela as part of an agreement with the country's government to support women and children, the organization said in a press release on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th November, 2018) Humanitarian workers from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have delivered some 130 tonnes of aid to Venezuela as part of an agreement with the country's government to support women and children, the organization said in a press release on Monday.

"UNICEF has flown in nearly 130 tonnes of medicines, health and nutrition supplies for 350,000 women and children in Venezuela since August to boost Government efforts to alleviate the impact of ongoing economic crisis on the most vulnerable," the release said. "The supplies are part of an agreement with the Government to expand UNICEF's programmes in the country, including through technical cooperation and capacity building."

The current economic crisis in Venezuela has reduced children's access to essential services and nearly 12 percent of the population is undernourished, the release said.

UNICEF has delivered 100 tons of nutritional supplies for children and 30 tons of medicine and health supplies to stop infectious diseases from spreading and help women and children in vulnerable communities, the release added.

For years, Venezuela has been living in a state of a political and economic crisis, which was worsened by a decline in oil prices and US sanctions. Millions of Venezuelans have been seeking refuge, mostly in neighboring Latin American countries. According to UN estimates, a total of 3 million people have left Venezuela, with around 2.4 million of them residing across Latin America and the Caribbean, including more than 1 million in Colombia.
