Moldovan Citizens More Up for Joining Eurasian Economic Union Than EU - Poll

More than 40 percent of the Moldovan population supports cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), giving preference to this organization over the European Union (EU), a report by Moldova's Association of Sociologists and Demographers showed Monday.

CHISINAU (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th November, 2018) More than 40 percent of the Moldovan population supports cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), giving preference to this organization over the European Union (EU), a report by Moldova's Association of Sociologists and Demographers showed Monday.

Around 41.5 percent of the respondents said that they would vote for joining the EAEU, while 38.7 percent would be up for entering the EU in case Moldova had a referendum to choose between those blocs next Sunday, according to the survey.

At the same time, 5.6 percent of the respondents opposed both unions, while 7.7 percent could not decide on the answer.

The survey was held on November 1-20 among 1,189 people across Moldova.

In May, the EAEU Supreme Council voted in favor of granting Moldova the observer status.

In July 2014, Moldova signed the Association Agreement with the European Union, under which the country has to completely open its market for the European goods and services. The deal entered into force in July 2016.
