IAEA Prepares for Verification of North Korea's Denuclearization - Safeguards Department

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has intensified preparations this year for its possible participation in verifying the progress made by North Korea toward denuclearization, Massimo Aparo, the head of the IAEA Department of Safeguards, said on Monday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th November, 2018) The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has intensified preparations this year for its possible participation in verifying the progress made by North Korea toward denuclearization, Massimo Aparo, the head of the IAEA Department of Safeguards, said on Monday.

"Regarding the DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the formal name for North Korea] nuclear issue ... we have intensified our effort since last year to announce the agency's readiness to play an essential role in verifying the DPRK nuclear program if the political agreement is reached among countries concerned," Aparo said at a meeting with the South Korean government, as quoted by the Yonhap news agency.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un committed to the complete denuclearization of North Korea following the summit with US President Donald Trump in Singapore in June, in exchange for security guarantees to the country and the suspension of joint US-South Korean military drills. Trump said that both US experts and international organizations would carry out the verification of the denuclearization process.

After the summit, the IAEA said that the agency was ready to provide its assistance to Pyongyang and Washington in verifying North Korea's denuclearization.
