MSF Closely Following Khartoum Peace Process In CAR - Operational Manager

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd November, 2018) Humanitarian organization Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF, or Doctors Without Borders) welcomes the peace talks in the Central African Republic (CAR) that were launched in Sudan's Khartoum in late August as an attempt to reconcile the warring sides, Christian Katzer, MSF operational manager for car said on Friday, adding that the organization was closely monitoring their progress.

"We are aware of the presence especially of military advisers ... We are also in close contact with the Russian Embassy in Bangui and we are closely observing the Khartoum peace process. And from a personal note, any attempt to bring peace to the CAR is very welcome," Katzer said at a briefing.

The Central African Republic has been struggling with the conflict between the mainly Muslim armed group Seleka, Christian Anti-balaka militia, and the government forces since 2012. According to the United Nations data, around 615,000 people have been displaced during the conflict.

On August 27-28, the major warring parties participated in Russia-brokered peace talks in the Sudanese capital. The meeting resulted in the signing of the Khartoum Declaration, which provided for the creation of an opposition union that would pave the way for a long-lasting peace in the country.
