UN Agencies, Global Community Should Increase Support For CAR Civilians - MSF Manager

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd November, 2018) UN relief agencies and the international community should do more to provide support to the people in need in the Central African Republic (CAR) because the nation's government is too weak to even provide protection for its population, Christian Katzer, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF, or Doctors Without Borders) operational manager for car, said on Friday.

"What we see is that there is actually too little aid provided. Even with the large number of staff and money that we are able to bring to the Central African Republic, we think there should be more. And also seeing that weak government, there needs to be more effort also by states and by the United Nations to support the people in need in the Central African Republic. There is definitely a lack of protection of civilians," Katzer said during a press briefing.

Katzer added that MSF spent around 50-55 million Euros ($56.7-$62 million) every year in the Central African Republic. The organization provides consultations and hospital care in 10 provinces, with a special focus on treating AIDS patients in the city of Carnot and the town of Paoua.

The Central African Republic has been destabilized by a violent conflict between the Christian anti-Balaka militia, Seleka faction and the government since 2012. Since 2014, the country has been divided between the three groups. In late August 2018, Seleka and anti-Balaka militia signed a Declaration of Understanding after a Russia-brokered peace meeting in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum.
