MADRID (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd November, 2018) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is arriving in Cuba on Thursday for the first official visit of a head of the Spanish government to the country in over 30 years, the Spanish government said, adding that the visit is aimed at improving bilateral relations.

The visit is expected to last just over a day and is intended to normalize and stabilize relations between the two countries. During his stay, Sanchez is set to have meetings with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel and local business people and intellectuals.

No talks have been scheduled either with former Cuban leader Raul Castro, who is now serving as the first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party, or with the country's opposition.

The prime minister will be accompanied by Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell, the minister for industry, tourism and trade, Reyes Maroto, along with over 20 business people.

The last official visit of a Spanish prime minister to Cuba took place back in 1986. Then-Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar visited the island in 1999 to participate in the Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, but this was not an official visit.
