At Least 40 People Injured During Opposition Rally in Bangladesh - Reports

At least 20 protesters and 20 police officers were wounded in clashes that erupted during a rally near the main office of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the country's capital of Dhaka on Wednesday, local media reported.

Thousands of BNP supporters marched toward the party's office, blocking the road, according to The Daily Star newspaper. The police officers tried to disperse the demonstrators, but the latter engaged in clashes. The BNP activists and supporters also vandalized several vehicles during the protest.

On Monday, Bangladeshi authorities decided to postpone the date of the general election by a week, shifting it to December 30. The Awami League Party is the current ruling party with the majority of seats in parliament led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. On Sunday, the BNP, which boycotted the last election in 2014, together with other opposition parties, confirmed its participation in the upcoming election.

The party has been selling nomination papers to those willing to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections with its tickets since Monday.
