Egyptian President to Take Part in Palermo Conference on Libyan Settlement - Reports

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi will take part in an international conference on the Libyan settlement, which is currently underway in Palermo, southern Italy, local media reported on Monday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th November, 2018) Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi will take part in an international conference on the Libyan settlement, which is currently underway in Palermo, southern Italy, local media reported on Monday.

According to MENA news agency, Sisi has departed from Cairo to Palermo for a two-day official visit.

Sisi left for Palermo at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, the outlet added. The Egyptian leader, in particular, plans to take part in a mini-summit of leaders of countries interested in the Libyan settlement.

Egypt, which has a long border with Libya, is actively involved in international efforts to resolve the situation in this conflict-torn country, and hosted a number of meetings aimed at unification of local military structures.

The goal of the Palermo conference, as outlined by the Italian government, is to provide a contribution to the peace settlement and political stabilization process in Libya, with the agreement of the main political actors in the country. The conference will also seek to make specific contributions on security and economic measures that can aid stability in the country, as well as provide a discussion on the hosting of general elections in Libya.

Libya has been in turmoil since the overthrow and killing of its long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The country is divided between two governments, with the eastern part controlled by the Libyan National Army (LNA), and the western part governed by the UN-backed Government of National Accord, led by Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj.
