Activists with the group "Extinction Rebellion" have commenced an occupation of the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in Westminster, claiming government inaction on environmental crisis has forced them into action, a Sputnik correspondent reported from the scene on Monday.
LONDON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th November, 2018) Activists with the group "Extinction Rebellion" have commenced an occupation of the UK Department for business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in Westminster, claiming government inaction on environmental crisis has forced them into action, a Sputnik correspondent reported from the scene on Monday."It's the opening salvo of a week of protests culminating in a day of mass civil disobedience on Saturday," Howard Rees, a spokesperson for the group, told Sputnik at the scene.
The protester described the government's insufficient response to environmental issues as a threat to the planet. Extinction Rebellion claims that the environmental crisis has now reached a critical phase, one that demands governments enact sweeping measures to curtail carbon emissions.
Rees spoke as police had already made at least one arrest as part of an attempt to clear the building entrance of protesters.
The group has also called for a mass demonstration in London next Saturday as the culmination of a week's worth of local actions starting Monday.
