WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th November, 2018) US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad is traveling to Kabul and Doha among other stops in the region to make progress on negotiations with the Taliban, the State Department said in a press release on Thursday.
"Khalilzad will travel to Afghanistan, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar with an interagency delegation from November 8-20," the release said. "He will meet with Afghan government officials and other interested parties to advance the goal of an intra-Afghan dialogue and negotiations that include the Taliban and lead to a sustainable peace."
During a similar trip last month Khalilzad urged the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban to put together authoritative negotiating teams and noted that both sides took steps in that direction, the release said.
On Friday, Russia will host diplomats from more than 10 countries, including the United States, to discuss the situation in Afghanistan. A delegation representing the Taliban movement is expected to participate in such a meeting for the first time.
