Unclear Why Attorney General Would Need to Recuse Himself From Mueller Probe - Conway

Senior White House Adviser Kellyanne Conway said on Thursday that she is unsure why the new interim Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker would need to recuse himself from overseeing Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th November, 2018) Senior White House Adviser Kellyanne Conway said on Thursday that she is unsure why the new interim Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker would need to recuse himself from overseeing Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

"I don't know why he [Whitaker] would be recused," Conway told reporters outside the White House.

On Wednesday, Trump named Whitaker, who was serving as former Attorney General Jeff Sessions' chief of staff, to the position of acting attorney general after Sessions' resigned at the president's request.

Numerous Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have called on Whitaker to recuse himself from overseeing the probe due to his "previous comments advocating defunding and imposing limitations on the Mueller investigation."

Mueller is investigating allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 election, as well as possible coordination between Moscow and the Trump campaign.

Both Trump and Moscow have repeatedly denied all allegations of collusion, and the Kremlin has called accusations of meddling in the election "absurd."
