UPDATE - US Democrats Flip 4 Seats In House, Republicans Gain 1 In Senate

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th November, 2018) US Democrats scored four early victories in elections for the House of Representatives as Republicans won a key seat that could cement their control over the Senate, major news networks reported.

The Democrats are projected to flip four of the 23 seats they need to win to take control of the US House of Representatives, exit polls revealed on Tuesday.

Democrat Jennifer Wexton ousted Republican Representative Barbara Comstock in the US state of Virginia's 10th congressional district, with 75 percent of votes counted, CBS News reported.

In Florida, Donna Shalala, Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Bill Clinton, won an open House seat that had previously been held by a Republican.

In Pennsylvania, two Democratic Party challengers have toppled Republican incumbents, US television news networks projected. Democrats Conor Lamb and Mary Gay Scanlon were both projected to win their election contests in the Keystone State, CNN and CBS projected.

But as Democrats made gains in the US House, Republicans captured a Senate seat and blocked off a key pathway for their rivals to take control of the upper chamber of Congress.

In the Senate, where Democrats need to pick up two seats to win a majority, Republican candidate Mike Braun defeated incumbent Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly.

US voters cast ballots on Tuesday to fill 435 seats in the US House Representatives and one-third of the 100-member Senate in addition to other local and statewide offices. Voters will elect House representatives for two-year terms and Senators for six-year terms.
