US Senate Foreign Relations Chair Backs Iran Sanctions, Trump's Effort To Find New Deal

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th November, 2018) US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker said in a statement on Monday that he supports the Trump administration's effort to seek a better Iran deal and highlighted the crucial role sanctions will play to bring Tehran back to the negotiating table.

"I support the administration in its pursuit of a better Iran deal - one without the sunset provisions that ultimately would have enabled Iran to achieve a nuclear weapons capability - and believe that imposing maximal economic pressure on Iran is vital for getting Iran back to the table," Corker said.

On Monday, the United States reimposed sanctions on Iran targeting the country's energy, banking, shipping, and shipbuilding sectors.

Monday's package is the second round of sanctions the United States put in place against Iran after Washington withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement, which is more formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

In the second round of sanctions unveiled on Monday, the US Treasury designated more than 700 Iranian individuals and entities, including 50 banks and their subsidiaries, leading shipping companies, 122 vessels and 67 aircraft, Tehran's national airline Iran Air as well as the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.
