US Not Looking to Grant More Exemptions From Iran Sanctions After 180 Days - State Dept

The United States does not plan to issue any additional new waivers from Iran sanctions after the SREs (significant reduction exemptions) granted to eight countries expire in six months, US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook told reporters on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd November, 2018) The United States does not plan to issue any additional new waivers from Iran sanctions after the SREs (significant reduction exemptions) granted to eight countries expire in six months, US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook told reporters on Friday.

"We are not looking to grant additional SREs at the end of the 180-day period. We are being very careful to advance our maximum economic pressure campaign without increasing the price of oil," Hook said. "Next year we anticipate a stronger oil supply coming online, and that will allow us to accelerate the path to zero."

Earlier in the day, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the United States would grant temporary waivers to eight countries to allow them to continue importing oil from Iran after November 5.

Pompeo said a list of the eight jurisdictions receiving the temporary waivers would be released on Monday, but added that the European Union as a bloc was not one of them, though individual countries from the EU could be included.

Six of the countries have agreed to significantly reduce their Iranian oil imports, while two others plan to halt their imports entirely, Pompeo said.

Also on Monday, the Treasury Department will add 700 Names to the list of individuals and entities designated under the Iran sanctions, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.

In May, Trump announced the United States' withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement and consequent reinstatement of sanctions that had previously been lifted under the nuclear deal.

The United States re-introduced a first round of sanctions against Iran in August. The second round of sanctions, targeting Iran's oil sector, is set to take effect on November 5.
