DHS Secretary Nielsen Briefs Trump On Protecting US Election Infrastructure - Statement

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd November, 2018) The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other federal agencies have briefed President Donald Trump on their efforts to protect the United States' election infrastructure ahead of next week's midterm congressional elections, DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in statement on Thursday.

"We are working with state and local election officials to ensure that every vote counts and will be counted correctly," Nielsen said via Twitter.

Nielsen noted that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) have also briefed the president.

In September, Trump signed an executive order that promises US economic sanctions against individuals, entities and nations that attempt to influence US elections with nefarious methods such as hacking vote counts, using social media to amplify bogus news reports or stealing personal information from voter rolls.

The United States has already imposed sanctions on Russia for its alleged interference in the 2016 US presidential election.

Russia has repeatedly denied all allegations of meddling, calling such accusations absurd and invented to excuse the election loss of a presidential candidate as well as to deflect public opinion from actual instances of election fraud, corruption and other pressing issues.
