Libyan Presidential Candidate Says Presence of Foreign Observers to Help Proper Elections

The presence of observers from both Western and Eastern countries will allow Libya to have properly monitored elections, Libyan presidential candidate Dr. Aref Ali Nayed told Sptunik in an interview.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st November, 2018) The presence of observers from both Western and Eastern countries will allow Libya to have properly monitored elections, Libyan presidential candidate Dr. Aref Ali Nayed told Sptunik in an interview.

Nayed, the chairman of the Libya Institute for Advanced Studies and former Libyan Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, is the only person who has officially and publicly announced his intention to run for president.

"If there are monitors from the European Union, from Russia, from China, from the African Union, from the Arab League, from South America, from Sweden, from Norway and all these countries, I think that we can have properly monitored elections," Nayed said.

The candidate stressed that every effort should be taken to hold the vote in order to unify Libya and stabilize the situation in the North African country.

"I truly believe that we should stop making excuses and get on with it and let the people go to the ballot boxes so that they can choose a new team of competent technocrats who can fix the country and deliver services," Nayed said.

In May, representatives of the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA), headquartered in Tripoli, on one side, and the authorities operating in the east of the country on the other, agreed that the country would hold parliamentary and presidential elections on December 10. The sides also agreed to work on uniting their security forces.

Libya has been torn apart by conflict since its long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011. The eastern part of the country is governed by the parliament, backed by the Libyan National Army (LNA) and located in Tobruk. The UN-backed GNA is headed by Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj.
