Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Sudan's Ambassador Discuss Situation in Darfur - Moscow

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin on Tuesday held a meeting with the Sudanese ambassador to Moscow, during which the two officials discussed the situation in Darfur region as well as settlement in the Abyei area claimed by Sudan and South Sudan, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th October, 2018) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin on Tuesday held a meeting with the Sudanese ambassador to Moscow, during which the two officials discussed the situation in Darfur region as well as settlement in the Abyei area claimed by Sudan and South Sudan, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"The sides focused on the situation in Darfur, and on the joint operation of the United Nations and the African Union in Darfur. The Russian side reaffirmed its commitment to assist in elaborating balanced .... parameters of withdrawal of this peacekeeping mission by the end of 2020, as it is prescribed by the UN Security Council Resolution 2429, taking into account the position of the host state," the statement said.

According to the ministry, the diplomats also stressed the importance of enhancing trust between Sudan and South Sudan for reaching a final settlement regarding the Abyei status.

The conflict between different communities in Darfur, a region in western Sudan, began in the 1980s and escalated dramatically in 2003, when rebel groups launched a campaign to topple the government of Sudanese President Omar Bashir. In 2007, the UN Security Council and the African Union sent a joint peacekeeping mission to the region.
