Former Slovak Prime Minister Elected Chairman of 'Friends of Crimea' Coordination Council

Former Slovak Prime Minister Jan Carnogursky was elected chairman of the coordination council of the Friends of Crimea international association, Georgy Muradov, the deputy prime minister of the Crimean government, said Friday.

SIMFEROPOL (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th October, 2018) Former Slovak Prime Minister Jan Carnogursky was elected chairman of the coordination council of the Friends of Crimea international association, Georgy Muradov, the deputy prime minister of the Crimean government, said Friday.

Friends of Crimea was established in 2017. The association adopted a resolution detailing the need to restore normal relations between Crimea and the global community.

"A coordination council has been established. It comprises about 14 people. Jan Carnogursky, known in Slovakia as a politician, and in Russia as a public figure and chairman of the Slovak-Russian friendship association, was elected chairman of the coordination council," Muradov told reporters.

In turn, Yaroslav Ivanchenko, the director of the business and cultural center of Crimea, told Sputnik that representatives of Armenia, Germany, Norway, Tunisia, China, Japan, Greece, Slovakia, Bulgaria, and Austria had joined the coordination council, among others.

Crimea rejoined Russia in 2014, when 97 percent of those participating in a regional referendum voted for the reunification. Despite this, the vote was not recognized by the majority of Western countries, including EU member states, which subsequently imposed economic and political sanctions on Moscow.

Russian authorities have repeatedly stated that the Crimean residents decided to rejoin Russia in accordance with democratic procedures. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that the issue of Crimea's territorial belonging is "historically closed."
