US Trade Officials Discuss Biotech Patents, Satellite Piracy With Chilean Counterparts

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th October, 2018) American and Chilean officials discussed pharmaceutical patents and satellite piracy issues during talks over their bilateral free trade agreement, the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) said in a press release.

"Officials also discussed a number of other bilateral matters of interest, including pharmaceutical patent-related issues, nutritional labeling, and the status of product specific rules of origin change requests," the release said on Wednesday.

Chile, the release added, also provided an update on domestic legislation targeting satellite piracy. During the meeting, hosted by Washington, the United States and Chile underscored the value of strengthening cooperation on intellectual property, according to the release.

Deputy US Trade Representative C.J. Mahoney and Chile's Director General for International Economic Affairs Rodrigo Yanez chaired the meeting, the twelfth of its kind, which was held on Tuesday.

In March, after Chile hosted the signing of the new Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, the United States launched a probe into how the deal will affect the US economy. The Trump administration pulled out of TPP talks in early 2017.
