UN Panel Report Calls for Drastic Action to Limit Global Warming

The world needs to start transforming now to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2030, a UN report urged Monday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th October, 2018) The world needs to start transforming now to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2030, a UN report urged Monday.

The landmark report by a team of 91 authors from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) highlights climate change impacts that could be avoided by limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius instead of the agreed 2 degrees.

"Limiting global warming to 1.5C would require rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society," the IPCC said in a press release.

The report found that limiting greenhouse gad emissions required transitions in land, energy, industry, buildings, transport, and cities.

Global net human-caused CO2 emissions would need to fall by 45 percent from 2010 levels by 2030, reaching "net zero" around 2050. Any remaining emissions would need to be balanced by removing CO2 from the air.

"The decisions we make today are critical in ensuring a safe and sustainable world for everyone, both now and in the future," said Debra Roberts, co-chair of an IPCC working group.

The IPCC report will be a key scientific input into December's climate change conference in Katowice, Poland, when governments review the 2015 Paris agreement to tackle climate change.

The deal was adopted by 195 nations who vowed to hold the rise in the global average temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
