Latvian President Plans To Start Consultations On New Gov't Within 2 Weeks - Office

RIGA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th October, 2018) President of Latvia Raimonds Vejonis plans to start consultations on the formation of a new government and a candidate for the prime minister's position with parties elected in the country's parliament within the next two weeks, the presidential office said Sunday.

On Saturday, Latvia held a parliamentary election, with 16 political parties competing for mandates in the 100-seat Saeima. The Latvian pro-minority Social Democratic Party "Harmony" (SDPS), which is mainly supported by the country's Russian-speaking population, came first in the election, receiving almost 20 percent of votes.

"Raymond Vejonis plans to start consultations on a new prime minister within two weeks after the elections to the Sejm," a representative of the presidential office said.

Vejonis also believes that the political parties should try to agree among themselves on the formation of a new cabinet in the next two weeks, according to the representative.

The populist KPV LV party, the New Conservative Party, the pro-EU Movement For!, the All For Latvia far-right national alliance, the Greens and Farmers Union as well as the liberal New Unity also passed the parliamentary threshold.
