Treasury Warns US Banks To Watch For Corrupt Money Transfers From Nicaragua - White House

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th October, 2018) The Department of Treasury has warned US banks to watch for the transfers of corrupt money from senior Nicaraguan political figures linked to President Daniel Ortega, the White House said in a press release on Friday.

"The Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) published an advisory to warn United States financial institutions that senior foreign political figures connected to the regime of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega may seek to transfer proceeds from acts of political corruption into the United States financial system," the release said.

The White House said the new advisory sends a strong message that US President Donald Trump will not tolerate the Nicaraguan government's "indiscriminate use of violence, repressive tactics, and corruption."

The United States calls for the peaceful restoration of democracy and the rule of law in Nicaragua, the release added.

Turmoil erupted in Nicaragua in April when people took to the streets to protest unpopular social security reforms. This led to months of demonstrations, which saw some 300 people killed and 2,000 others injured.
