US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo congratulated Maldivian President-elect Ibrahim Solih on his election victory and expressed readiness to enhance bilateral collaboration, the State Department said in a readout of a phone call between the two officials on Friday.

"Pompeo spoke by phone today with Maldivian President-elect Ibrahim Solih to congratulate him on his recent electoral victory," the readout said. "He said the United States looks forward to ... expanding US cooperation with Maldives in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific."

Pompeo said the election demonstrated the preference of the people of Maldives and all parties must respect it, the readout added.

The Maldives election was held on September 30. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) of the Maldivian Democratic Party won against his rival Yameen by Abdulla by over 38,000 votes.
