KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th September, 2018) Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Wednesday handed a formal note to UN chief Antonio Guterres, saying he would discontinue a friendship treaty with Russia, his spokesman said.
"The president has passed a note to the UN secretary general informing him about the decision not to continue the treaty on friendship with Russia," Svyatoslav Tsegolko tweeted.
Ukrainian authorities said earlier that the national security and defense council wanted to let the treaty expire next April, when it marks 20 years since its coming into being.
Moscow said it deeply regretted the move and called it harmful, while Ukrainian opposition warned of a legal vacuum in future ties with Russia.
