Beijing Rejects Trump's Accusations of Attempting to Influence US Election by Tariffs

China does not interfere in internal affairs of other sovereign states, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Wednesday in response to US President Donald Trump's statements accusing China of attempts to influence the US election through trade tariffs.

BEIJING (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th September, 2018) China does not interfere in internal affairs of other sovereign states, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Wednesday in response to US President Donald Trump's statements accusing China of attempts to influence the US election through trade tariffs.

Trump said in a statement on Tuesday that China is trying to influence US elections by imposing tariffs that hurt members of his political base, including farmers, ranchers and industrial workers.

"People familiar with China's foreign policy know that China adheres to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other states. We do not want others to interfere in our policy, and do not interfere in the internal affairs of others," Geng said at a briefing.

On Monday, Trump said the United States would impose fresh 10-percent tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods starting on September 24. On January 1, the tariffs are expected to rise to 25 percent.

China hit back at the United States with $60 billion of new tariffs, which will also enter into force on September 24.

China-US trade tensions escalated in March after Trump announced import tariffs on steel and aluminum. Since, Washington and Beijing have imposed several rounds of tit-for-tat tariffs, with bilateral trade consultations so far failing to halt the mounting trade war.
