MSF Calls Greece's Promise to Partially Decongest Moria Migrant Camp 'Inadequate Response'

The Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) medical humanitarian organization said on Wednesday that it doubts migrants will get decent accommodation on the Greek mainland after Athens said it would move some 2,000 asylum-seekers from the island of Lesbos by the end of the month in an attempt to ease overcrowding at the camp.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th September, 2018) The Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) medical humanitarian organization said on Wednesday that it doubts migrants will get decent accommodation on the Greek mainland after Athens said it would move some 2,000 asylum-seekers from the island of Lesbos by the end of the month in an attempt to ease overcrowding at the camp.

"Over the past three years the Greek government has made numerous promises to decongest the islands, however, they have always come too late and are an inadequate response to the overcrowding. This unsustainable approach cannot tackle the systematic problem that the EU-Turkey deal has failed," the MSF Head of Mission for Lesbos Louise Roland-Gosselin said in a press release.

She stressed that this one-time measure failed to resolve the lasting problem.

"As MSF we have serious concerns that even if this transfer is achieved, the asylum seekers, who will likely have specific medical needs - such as those we treat in Moria - will not be adequately or safely accommodated on the Greek mainland. For this reason, we are calling for the emergency evacuation of all vulnerable people, especially children, to other EU countries," Roland-Gosselin added.

According to the MSF, the Moria camp only has the capacity for 3,100 people, but is currently hosting 9,000, a third of whom are children.
