Top N. Korean Official to Meet Russian Upper House Speaker Later in Week - Russian Embassy

Ri Hye Jong, the vice-chairperson of North Korea's Supreme Parliamentary Assembly (SPA), has left Pyongyang for St. Petersburg to take part in the second Eurasian Women's Forum, set for Thursday and Friday, and hold a meeting with Russian upper house speaker Valentina Matviyenko, the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang said Monday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th September, 2018) Ri Hye Jong, the vice-chairperson of North Korea's Supreme Parliamentary Assembly (SPA), has left Pyongyang for St. Petersburg to take part in the second Eurasian Women's Forum, set for Thursday and Friday, and hold a meeting with Russian upper house speaker Valentina Matviyenko, the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang said Monday.

According to the statement, published on Facebook, Russian Ambassador to North Korea Alexander Matsegora escorted Ri to the Pyongyang airport. The North Korean official departed to St. Petersburg via Vladivostok and Moscow.

"During her stay in Russia, Ri Hye Jong plans to take part in the events of the forum and hold a meeting with Russian upper house speaker Valentina Matviyenko, with whom she got acquainted a few days ago, when Valentina Ivanovna was in Pyongyang on an official visit," the embassy said.

The embassy added that it had taken an active part in preparations for the visit of the North Korean delegation to Russia.

The first Eurasian Women's Forum was held on September 24-25, 2015 in St. Petersburg. The event gathered state officials, members of the business and scientific community, as well as prominent leaders of feminist movements from across the world. Among the main topics of the forum were social security, sustainable development, international cooperation, as well as expansion of women's participation in politics, the economy and other areas.

This year's event will be the second edition of the forum. Following the 2015 Eurasian Women's Forum, which brought together participants from 80 countries, it was decided that the event would be held once every three years.
