Trump Must Recognize, Respect Puerto Rico Death Count in Hurricane Maria - Governor

US President Donald Trump must recognize the death count in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria out of respect for the people impacted by the storm, the territory's Governor Ricardo Rossello said in a press release on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th September, 2018) US President Donald Trump must recognize the death count in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria out of respect for the people impacted by the storm, the territory's Governor Ricardo Rossello said in a press release on Thursday.

"The people of Puerto Rico deserve a full accounting of the impact of the storm, and they deserve recognition of that impact by our president," Rossello said in the release.

Rossello said the country strongly denounces anyone who would use this disaster or question our suffering for political purposes.

Trump tweeted earlier on Thursday that the study was completely erroneous, and said that when he visited the island, between six and 18 deaths had been registered and the toll did not increase after the storm passed.

An independent study conducted by the George Washington University Milken Institute school of Public Health and released in August concluded that Hurricane Maria caused the deaths of 2,975 people in Puerto Rico between September 2017 and February 2018.
