Uniper CFO Says Energy Firm Committed to Nord Stream 2 After Reports on Likely Withdrawal

German Uniper energy company stays committed to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project and believes in its full implementation, firm's Chief Financial Officer Christopher Delbruck said on Thursday, rejecting media reports on Uniper's possible withdrawal from the project.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th August, 2018) German Uniper energy company stays committed to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project and believes in its full implementation, firm's Chief Financial Officer Christopher Delbruck said on Thursday, rejecting media reports on Uniper's possible withdrawal from the project.

Media reported on Wednesday, citing Delbruck, that Uniper could exit the project fearing US sanctions.

"Uniper will remain one of the financing partners of this project and we are - as before - fully committed to the project ... We are convinced that the project makes sense in terms of energy policy for Germany and Europe and against the backdrop of declining natural gas production in Europe ... I am therefore firmly convinced that the Nord Stream 2 project will also be realized," Delbruck said, as quoted by his press service.

The Nord Stream 2 project envisages the construction of two gas pipelines that will run from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to a hub in Germany, bypassing Ukraine. It is a joint venture of the Russian Gazprom energy giant with Uniper, French Engie, Austrian OMV AG, UK-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell, and Wintershall.

The United States has long been opposed to the project and even incorporated a provision for counteracting the construction of the pipelines in its Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, signed by US President Donald Trump in August last year.

Washington believes the Nord Stream 2 project has "detrimental impacts" on the EU energy security, as well as gas market development in Central and Eastern Europe, and prioritizes the export of US energy resources.

The US legislation says that Trump could impose sanctions with respect to a person who makes investments contributing to the construction of Russian energy export pipelines.
